The Coral Gables Cavaliers will square off against the Somerset Academy Panthers at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Coral Gables was able to grind out a solid win over Brito, taking the game 7-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cavaliers.
Carlos Torres tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Coral Gables' victory was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Diego Llanes, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Julian Saveedra was another, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Somerset Academy owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Saturday. They blew past Hialeah 6-0. The Panthers not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 18th.
Somerset Academy also got a great performance from Luis Rivera as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Rivera also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Panthers are 6-3 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-10 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jon Mora, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Somerset Academy's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-1 (and 4-12 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Alan Sanchez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Somerset Academy's win bumped their record up to 10-13. As for Coral Gables, their victory bumped their record up to 9-11-1.
Coral Gables suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Somerset Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Cavaliers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
