Two dominant guards in Mia Brown and Amayah Leyva are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Horizon Huskies will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against the Buckeye Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on February 7th. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Horizon's strategy against the Firebirds on Monday. Horizon enjoyed a cozy 58-43 victory over the Firebirds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Horizon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Noel Gallegos, who scored 19 points. Peyton Schiltz was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Buckeye waltzed into their contest on Friday with ten straight wins but they left with 11. They blew past Copper Canyon 54-27 on the road. Buckeye has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 27 points or more this season.
Leyva was her usual excellent self, scoring 25 points along with five steals. She has been hot recently, having posted 18 or more points the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kiria Avila escarcega, who scored eight points along with nine assists and seven rebounds.
Horizon is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season. As for Buckeye, their victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-7.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Horizon have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 34.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Buckeye struggles in that department as they've been averaging 35.5 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Horizon beat the Hawks 45-35 in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Horizon since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
