The Cupertino Pioneers put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 48-31 victory over Independence. Given Cupertino's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while Independence is ranked 1027th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Among those leading the charge was Justin Yu, who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 20 points and 2 assists. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for him. Max Lin was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Independence's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Joshua Villanueva, who scored ten points. The match was Villanueva's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ethan Gualberto, who scored ten points.
Cupertino's win bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Independence, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.
Cupertino will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against Fremont at 8:00 p.m. on December 16th. Independence and Los Altos will face off at 6:30 p.m. on December 16th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Los Altos will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
