The Sunlake Seahawks will head out on the road to square off against the St. Petersburg Green Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
On Monday, Sunlake blew past Wiregrass Ranch, posting a 66-39 victory. The Seahawks have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 21 points or more this season.
Sunlake found their leader in sophomore Jessi Saffold, who shot 43% from the field to rack up 16 points and eight steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Cherity Powells, who posted 11 points in addition to six rebounds and five steals.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led St. Petersburg over Dunedin in every quarter on their way to victory on Wednesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Green Devils blew the Falcons out of the water with a 77-25 final score. With the Green Devils ahead 46-12 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
St. Petersburg's win came from a few key players Sunlake will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Shaw Summer, who almost dropped a triple-double with 15 points, 12 boards, and nine assists. Those nine assists gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Quay Curry, who went 5-for-8 on her way to 11 points along with three steals and three blocks.
St. Petersburg was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.
Sunlake's record is now 4-1. As for St. Petersburg, their record now sits at 3-1.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Sunlake has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 26.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like St. Petersburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 36.5 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Sunlake and St. Petersburg were neck-and-neck when the teams last played back in January, but Sunlake came up empty-handed after a 66-65 loss. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Summer, who dropped a double-double with 27 points and 17 rebounds.
