The Atwater Falcons will head out on the road to take on the Golden Valley Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Atwater is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Atwater will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs last Wednesday, then bounced right back against Los Banos on Thursday. The Falcons blew past the Tigers 13-1. The Falcons have beaten the Tigers the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Tigers has come to flipping the script.
The team relied heavily on Madi Hiler, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Audrina Granados, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Atwater always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Los Banos only posted an OBP of .111.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, Golden Valley made sure to put some runs up on the board against El Capitan on Wednesday. The Cougars sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 12-10 victory over the Gauchos. The Cougars' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Savanna Benc made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
In other batting news, Allie Minor was a standout: she scored four runs and stole six bases while going 4-for-5. Emily Green was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
Atwater's record now sits at 14-4. As for Golden Valley, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 4-8.
Golden Valley's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Atwater hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. It's a different story for Golden Valley, though, as they've only averaged .199. Will they be able to contain Atwater's hitters?
Atwater was able to grind out a solid victory over Golden Valley in their previous matchup back in March, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Falcons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
