The Carthage Comets can finally bid farewell to their three-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They greeted the New Year with with a 65-50 victory over Cortland. Given Carthage's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 343rd, while Cortland is ranked 743rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cortland's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Caden Albright, who scored ten points. Those ten points set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Cal Albright, who scored ten points.
Carthage's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-5. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.3 points per game. As for Cortland, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-8.
Carthage won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Lowville at 12:30 p.m. on January 6th. Lowville knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matches -- so hopefully Carthage likes a good challenge. As for Cortland, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Onondaga at 6:45 p.m. on Monday. Onondaga comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
