Basketball Recap: Barrow Piles Up the Points Against Hutchison

Barrow waltzed into their contest on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They took their match with ease, bagging a 71-18 victory over the Hutchison Hawks. Given the Whalers' advantage in MaxPreps' Alaska basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Hawks are ranked 87th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Barrow to victory were Kylen Burnell and Aiga Unutoa. Burnell went 8 of 15 on her way to 22 points and five boards, while Unutoa went 9 for 17 en route to 19 points along with five assists and three steals. The game was Burnell's third in a row with at least ten points. Zadah Unutoa was another key player, putting up six points in addition to seven steals and six rebounds.

Barrow smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Barrow pushed their record up to 7-2 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 16.0 points per game. As for Hutchison, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-5.

Barrow wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 77-23 victory against Nikiski on the 24th. As for Hutchison, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-12 loss against Lathrop on the 24th.
