Video: California Top 5 plays - Sept. 21Watch the state's five best plays of the week. There's a new sheriff in town, and the name is the St. Mary's Rams.
St. Mary's (Stockton) took over the Open Division selection for Northern California in the MaxPreps California Regional Bowl Game matchups after De La Salle (Concord) lost its first game of the season to East (Salt Lake City, Utah) 23-21.
The last time De La Salle wasn't considered the top team in Northern California was 2008 when Grant (Sacramento) received the Open Division bid and defeated Long Beach Poly. Prior to that season, you would have to go back to 1991 to find a time when the Spartans weren't the top team in NorCal. That's also the last time De La Salle lost a North Coast Section championship.
It should also be noted that according to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff bylaws, both Del Oro (Loomis) and St. Mary's could end up playing in the Division 1 playoffs (if they both win their league) or they could both end up in the Division 2 playoffs (if they don't win their league). We will continue to list St. Mary's as the top Division 1 team in the Sac-Joaquin Section and Del Oro as the top Division 2 team until league champions have been decided.
Also, Central Catholic (Modesto) can no longer be considered a Division 3 team in the Sac-Joaquin Section this year due to its continued success at that level. The Raiders will be considered Division 2 for the remainder of the season. Oakdale replaces Central Catholic in that division this week.
MaxPreps determines its regional matchup predictions based on the MaxPreps Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Care is also taken to avoid regional matchups between teams from the same section when possible. The team's record from last year and its preseason computer ranking are included in the preseason regional matchups.
