Lincoln County (Panaca, Nev.) senior guard
Dantley Walker scored 64 points on Saturday and broke the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's boys basketball career scoring record in a 95-88 win over Lake Mead Academy (Henderson).
The 64-point outburst is the highest single-game total in the nation this year and six points shy of the NIAA record of 70 scored by Jim Summers of Douglas in 1952. Walker scored 62 points in a 100-97 victory over Needles (Calif.) on Jan. 7.
The 5-foot-11 Walker entered Saturday's game needing 51 points to tie former Galena (Reno) star and current Portland Trail Blazers forward Luke Babbitt. Walker hit an NBA-range 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to top Babbitt's mark of 2,941 points, which he set from 2005-08.
Walker scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to help the Class 2A Lynx pull out the victory. Walker made nine 3-pointers and was 17-for-17 from the free-throw line to go along with seven assists.
Walker now has 2,954 career points. He is drawing interest from schools such as Montana State, Utah State, Utah Valley, Brigham Young and Weber State, although he plans to serve a LDS Church mission after graduating from Lincoln County.
"He was locked in," Lincoln County assistant coach Greg Walker, Dantley's father, told Nevadapreps.com. "He wanted to do it at home in front of our fans."
Lake Mead's L.J. Yamzon hit 11 3-pointers and finished with 40 points, including 22 in the fourth quarter. Walker and Yamzon combined for 49 of the 66 points scored in the fourth quarter.
