Newport Central Catholic extended the longest winning streak in 2A District 6 this week by beating Beechwood, 34-14. The win marks fourth in a row for the the Thoroughbreds.
Newport made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,965 from 11,124.
Bishop Brossart's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Casey Pelgen threw for 58 and one touchdown and Sean Tieman had 43 yards receiving. On the ground Pelgen chipped in 48 yards. Jeffery Steffen helped Bishop Brossart's passing attack out by catching one ball for 10 yards.
Holy Cross's Mitch Trail and Burt Pouncy have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Trail has thrown for 787 yards this season, while Pouncy, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 25 catches for 466 yards. The Mustangs' Jacob Elbert leads the league in rushing yards with 1093.
