Bassfield (Miss.) had a big 27-point second quarter on Saturday, sealing a 42-0 victory over East Marion (Columbia, Miss.).
The Yellowjackets scored on a touchdown run by
Jomez Applewhite, a
Rod Williams touchdown run, a touchdown run by Williams and a touchdown pass by Applewhite to
Jeffery Smith in the quarter.
Bassfield was up 29-0 at the half after taking the lead on a safety in the first quarter.
BHS expanded its lead to 35 points entering the fourth quarter. The Yellowjackets scored once in the quarter on a defensive touchdown.
With the win Bassfield extended its winning streak to seven games. BHS defeated the Chiefs 32-0 last week.
Applewhite stood out for the Yellowjackets in the win. The senior threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
Bassfield came into the game allowing 6.5 points per game. The Eagles' zero points were well below their season average of 21.0 per game. East Marion came in giving up 13.6 points per game this season. EM struggled against BHS, which came in averaging 40.7 points per game.
The victory will ease some of the sting of the Yellowjackets' close 23-21 loss to the Columbia school last season.
East Marion (3-3) goes up against Lumberton in a 2A Region 8 game matchup next week, while Bassfield (7-0) locks horns with North Forrest also in a 2A Region 8 game.
