Football Recap: Bellevue Piles Up the Points Against Athens

Athens kept up with Bellevue until halftime on Friday, but afterwards: not so much. The Broncos took their game with ease, bagging a 42-14 victory over the Indians. The Broncos might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by 22 points or more this season.

Bellevue's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zain Qahwash, who rushed for 56 yards and two scores, and also threw for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only six passes. Those 56 rushing yards gave Qahwash a new career-high. Wyatt Dunlap was in the mix as well, providing Bellevue with two TDs.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Bellevue proved: they limited Athens to a paltry 1.9 yards per carry. While two picked up at least five total tackles, Dunlap stood above the rest. He picked up 85 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Bellevue's ground attack was stronger, having averaged four.

Despite the loss, Athens still got an impressive performance from Abe Carpenter, who picked up 44 receiving yards and one touchdown, and also punched in one TD on the ground.

The victory made it two in a row for Bellevue and bumps their season record up to 3-2. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 6.2 yards per carry in those games compared to only 3.1 in the others. As for Athens, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Bellevue didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 66-12 loss against Mendon on the 3rd. As for Athens, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 59-6 defeat against Climax-Scotts on the 3rd.
