Sumrall is a perfect 5-0 against Stringer since February of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Sumrall Bobcats are taking a road trip to square off against the Stringer Red Devils at 6:00 p.m. Sumrall is coming into the contest hot, having won their last seven games.
On Tuesday, Sumrall needed a bit of extra time to put away South Jones. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Braves 7-6. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Avery Smith spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kynnedy Lumpkins, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run and two RBI. Kynlee Speed was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-5.
Sumrall hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most one strikeouts in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Stringer sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over Northeast Jones on Monday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Red Devils.
Stringer also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Madilyn Graham gave up just two earned (and four unearned) runs on three hits and racked up 14 Ks. The dominant performance gave Graham a new career-high in strikeouts.
On the hitting side, Jaycee Holifield was a standout: she fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Kayleigh Douglas also deserves some recognition as she hit her first doubles of the season.
Stringer pushed their record up to 8-2-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing nine hits in those games compared to only 5.17 in the others. As for Sumrall, their record is now 13-2.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Sumrall hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like Stringer struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Sumrall skirted past Stringer 4-2 in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Will Sumrall repeat their success, or does Stringer have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
