Apollo (Glendale, Ariz.) didn't let up as Saturday's game came to a close, scoring seven in the fourth quarter to seal a 35-9 victory over
Willow Canyon (Surprise, Ariz.).
After taking the lead on a
Jordan Gungl touchdown run in the first quarter, the Hawks were up 27-10 at the half.
Apollo scored 20 points in the second quarter on the way to a win. AHS scored on a touchdown pass by Gungl to
Steffon Canady, a touchdown run by
Mohammed Mohammed and a
Nico Bayless touchdown run in the quarter.
Willow Canyon's only touchdown came on a 24-yard pass from
Tristan Madden to
Alex Gallaspy in the first quarter.
The Glendale school entered the contest giving up 24.9 points per game this year. A defensively strong the Hawks kept the Wildcats below the 14.7 points it had been averaging per game.
The defeat comes as a step back for Willow Canyon, which notched a 19-8 victory over Kellis in its previous outing. The win brought Apollo's winning streak to three games.
Willow Canyon (1-7) goes up against Centennial in a II Section III game matchup next week, while Apollo (4-4) locks horns with Kellis also in a II Section III game.
