The Covington Buccs will head out to square off against the Felicity-Franklin Cardinals at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Covington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Covington is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They came out on top against Fort Loramie by a score of 6-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Buccs.
Whitney Burns spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Elizabeth Coblentz, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Foutz, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Covington lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. They are 12-2 when they post two or more home runs.
Meanwhile, Felicity-Franklin got themselves on the board against New Miami on Monday, but New Miami never followed suit. They blew past the Vikings 13-0.
Brook Caudill made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.5 strikeouts per game. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Lacee Easter was incredible, going 2-for-3 with five RBI, three runs, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Khloie Martin also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Covington pushed their record up to 18-9 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Felicity-Franklin, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-12 record this season.
Covington skirted past Felicity-Franklin 1-0 in their previous meeting back in May of 2015. Do the Buccs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cardinals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
