The St. Johns Redskins will venture away from home to square off against the Tombstone Yellow Jackets at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. St. Johns is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
St. Johns is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They skirted past Arizona Lutheran Academy 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Redskins have posted since April 3rd.
Kaden Waite was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of T Platt, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: St. Johns kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are 12-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Tombstone, who bounced back after a loss on the road back in April. They came out on top against Willcox by a score of 7-4 two weeks ago.
DJ Elias made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Trey Franklin, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Tombstone: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7-1 otherwise. Erik Koehler was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Tombstone is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for St. Johns, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-12-1.
Both St. Johns and Tombstone just can't seem to miss. The Redskins have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10 hits per game. However, it's not like Tombstone struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Johns couldn't quite get it done against Tombstone in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 4-1. Can the Redskins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
