The Purnell Swett Rams pushed their score all the way to 62 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 70-62 hit to the loss column at the hands of Whiteville. Purnell Swett was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Whiteville apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.
When it comes to explaining why Purnell Swett lost, one person who can't be blamed is Collin Sampson. Despite the final result, he scored 31 points along with four steals. Those 31 points set a new season-high mark for him. Darius Bethea was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with 11 rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Purnell Swett and nudges their season record down to 2-4. As for Whiteville, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 2-4.
Purnell Swett will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Cape Fear at 7:30 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Whiteville and Lumberton will face off at 12:00 p.m. on December 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in Lumberton's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matchups.
