5A District 16 recap October 8, 2013
Andrew Freeman and Deonte Stemage provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Cardinal Gibbons. The longest such play in 5A District 16 this season, the connection resulted in 98 yards.
Sony Michel of American Heritage ran for the longest rushing play in the league this season against Jackson last week. Michel scampered for 84 yards on the play and finished with 117 on the day as his team topped the Generals.
American Heritage's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Torrance Gibson threw for 149 and 3 touchdowns and Isaiah McKenzie had 111 yards receiving. On the ground Michel chipped in 117 yards. Dallas Perez helped American Heritage's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 38 yards.
He was 5-12 with 0 interceptions.
Juwan Dowels was a key player and the best on defense this week as Mike Rumph's team bested Jackson. The 5-foot-10 senior nabbed 1 interception.
Freeman provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Key West lost to the Chiefs. He completed 5 passes for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 45 yards.
Michel was the best running back in the league this week. Teammate Gibson added to the ground attack by rushing for 22 yards.
American Heritage's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Patriots feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Gibson has thrown for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns this season, while McKenzie has 12 catches for 228 yards.
Cardinal Gibbons added to the longest winning streak in 5A District 16 this week by beating the Conchs, 63-20. The victory was the sixth in a row for Michael Morrill's team.
