The Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineers will head out on the road to square off against the Central Dragons at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Philipsburg-Osceola is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Philipsburg-Osceola beat Penns Valley Area 4-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mountaineers.
Alivia Bizzarri was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI.
Meanwhile, Central didn't have quite enough to beat Bedford on Monday and fell 9-8. The Dragons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Like Philipsburg-Osceola, Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Riley Peterson. She didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. Peterson was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Those runs marked the first that she has scored this season.
In other batting news, Aubrey Rhodes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Hailey Fries was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Central's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Philipsburg-Osceola, their win bumped their record up to 6-3.
Central's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Philipsburg-Osceola has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.3 hits per game. It's a different story for Central, though, as they've been averaging 10.9 hits. Given Philipsburg-Osceola's sizable advantage in that area, the Dragons will need to find a way to close that gap.
Philipsburg-Osceola took their victory against Central when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mountaineers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
