Eagle and Mountain View are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will be taking part in a tournament against the Mavericks at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The last four games Eagle has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Eagle is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Idaho's top teams: Rocky Mountain, who was ranked 16th at the time (Eagle was ranked fourth). The Mustangs had just enough and edged out the Grizzlies 5-4.
Eagle got a great performance from Jacob Ames as he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). Ames has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Eagle's win was truly a team effort as eight different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Owen Brent, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI. Sam Palfreyman was another, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Eagle was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April.
Meanwhile, Mountain View entered their tilt with Ridgevue on Saturday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Warhawks 12-2. The Mavericks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Preston Flournoy made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Flournoy was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run and three runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Mountain View got a big performance out of Chris Maiocca, who went 1-for-2 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Braylon Schellhammer, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Eagle's victory bumped their record up to 20-7. As for Mountain View, their win bumped their record up to 22-8.
Eagle was able to grind out a solid victory over Mountain View in their previous meeting last Thursday, winning 5-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
