The Virginia high school football season came to a close this weekend as six state champions were crowned.
Three schools capped off unbeaten seasons with a state title in the early games on Saturday as Riverheads, Hopewell and Maury each finish 15-0.
Hopewell capped off an unbeaten season, coasting to a 35-7 victory over Lord Botetourt (14-1) in the Class 3 championship game.
Riverheads captured its fourth consecutive state championship on
Saturday, defeating Galax (13-2) 31-24 in a thrilling Class 1 state
title contest. A 60-yard run by Cole Burton broke a 24-24 tie with four
minutes remaining.
In another exciting showdown, Maury held off Stone Bridge (12-2) 28-21 in a Class 5 title game that appeared to be getting out of hand in the second quarter after a 28-0 start for the Commodores.
South County (15-0) captured their first state title in program history, knocking off Oscar Smith (13-2) 14-13 in a defensive struggle that saw zero points in the second half.
In other late games Saturday, Appomattox County (13-2) cruised to a 42-21 victory over Stuarts Draft (13-2) in the Class 2 title game and Lake Taylor (14-2) breezed by Tuscarora (13-2) 34-14 in Class 4.
Champions in 2018 include Riverheads (Group 1A), Graham (Group 2A), Heritage (Group 3A), Woodgrove (Group 4A), Highland Springs (Group 5A) and Manchester (Group 6A).
The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association will be crowning state champions in three divisions while the Virginia Independent Schools Football League will hand out championship hardware in one 8-Man Class. In order to access those brackets click
