Streamwood extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Monday, dropping them down to 0-6. They came up short against the Wheeling Wildcats, falling 28-16. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Friday (15), the Sabres still had to take the loss.
Gabriella Ponta and Olivia Gallegos did some serious damage despite the final result: Ponta went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Gallegos went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Ponta has hit this season. Valentina Solis was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
As for Wheeling, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 4-2. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Wheeling's side, Olivia Aquino made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Aquino has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Wheeling got a massive performance out of Jessica Niznik, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, and one double. Those four hits gave Niznik a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Alaina Costello, who went 4-for-5 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Looking ahead, Streamwood will face off against Bartlett at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wheeling, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Hoffman Estates at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.86 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
