California Large Schools All-State Football Team

Throughout the 2018 season, Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and St. John Bosco (Bellflower) were ranked among the top teams in the nation, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that those two teams dominated the MaxPreps California Large Schools All-State Team.

Mater Dei, which won the Open Division Bowl Game against De La Salle (Concord), finished the season ranked No. 1 in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings and No. 2 in the Xcellent 25. St. John Bosco, meanwhile, lost to Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division 1 finals and finished the season ranked Nos. 2 and No. 3 in the respective rankings. The Monarchs placed eight on the two 32-member teams while the Braves had four.

Tops among Mater Dei's All-State members is Bru McCoy, who is the MaxPreps Large Schools State Player of the Year. One of the leading receivers in the state with 78 catches for 1,428 yards and 18 touchdowns. He came on strong in the postseason, catching 26 passes for 514 yards and six touchdowns. He was also named player of the year by both the Orange County Register and the Southern Section Division 1 football coaches.
