Lakeview and Rocky Grove are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Sailors will head out on the road to take on the Orioles at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Lakeview will be strutting in after a victory while Rocky Grove will be coming in after a loss.
Lakeview was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Maplewood on Monday. The Sailors put the hurt on the Tigers with a sharp 14-1 win. The Sailors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matches by ten runs or more this season.
Maddox Bell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Parker Montgomery was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Cody Fagley was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and two runs.
Lakeview was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .481. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Maplewood only posted a batting average of .059.
The home team had won the previous five meetings between Rocky Grove and West Middlesex, and West Middlesex kept the tradition alive. The Orioles fell just short of the Big Reds by a score of 3-2 on Monday. The loss continues a trend for the Orioles in their meetings with the Big Reds: they've now lost three in a row.
Rocky Grove saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Landon Jones, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Lakeview pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average this season. As for Rocky Grove, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Lakeview has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Rocky Grove struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Lakeview's way against Rocky Grove in their previous matchup back in April, as Lakeview made off with a 12-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Sailors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
