Class 2A boys basketball is particularly strong this year in New Mexico, according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings. The second-smallest class currently has five teams ranked among the state's top 40.
The three biggest classes (6A, 5A and 4A), dominate the very top of the state's 152 teams which play basketball, but the smallest three are holding their own. There are three Class 3A and a pair of 1A schools which also hold positions among the state's top 42.
Class 3A Pecos is the highest-ranked small school at No. 15 overall. The Panthers have a 13-1 record and are undefeated since a season-opening 67-40 setback against state No. 18 West Las Vegas. They are averaging 68.8 points, 13.7 steals and shooting 47 percent from the field.
Pecos has three juniors scoring in double figures, led by a pair of 6-footers.
Carlos Cordova averages 17.6 points and 5.0 steals, while
Mario Archuleta averages an even 17 points. No. 3 scorer is 5-7
Josh DeHerrera at 10.7.
Lordsburg leads the Class 2A schools with a 29th overall ranking. The Mavericks have a 14-1 record and they also have not lost since the season opener when they dropped a 59-42 verdict to Silver, which is ranked No. 23 overall in the state.
Class 1A is led by Quemado, 15-0 and ranked No. 30 in the state. The Eagles rely on five seniors, one junior, two sophomores and one freshman and have outscored their opponents by an impressive 1,019 to 608.
