Covington is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Oakwood a three-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Covington Trojans will be playing at home against the Oakwood Comets at 5:30 p.m. Covington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Covington is headed into the matchup having just suffered their closest loss since April 20, 2024 on Monday. They fell just short of Terre Haute South Vigo by a score of 6-4.
Covington saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Landon Hardy, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Oakwood came into Monday's game having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They never let Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory on Monday. The Comets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by seven runs or more this season.
Chase Harrison was a major factor no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Oakwood is 5-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 11-12 otherwise. Harrison was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Bryson Marcinko was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Oakwood is undefeated when Marcinko posts two or more runs, but 7-13 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jackson Dudley, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Oakwood was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .435. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Covington's defeat dropped their record down to 10-9. As for Oakwood, their win bumped their record up to 16-13.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Covington has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Oakwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Covington couldn't quite get it done against Oakwood in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 as they fell 7-4. Will the Trojans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
