The Elkhart Elks will face off against the Cayuga Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Elkhart is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Elkhart made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Groesbeck, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Elks fell just short of the Goats by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday. The Elks haven't had much luck with the Goats recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Coyt Cooper was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cayuga came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.2 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They had just enough and edged out the Polar Bears 10-8.
The team relied heavily on Harris Reynolds, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Grayson Walker also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Cayuga hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive games.
Elkhart's loss dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Cayuga, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 7-3.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Elkhart has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .486. However, it's not like Cayuga struggles in that department as they've averaged .441. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Elkhart came out on top in a nail-biter against Cayuga in their previous meeting last Saturday, sneaking past 4-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Elks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
