Hodgeman County is 3-0 against South Barber since November of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Hodgeman County Longhorns will head out on the road to face off against the South Barber Chieftains at 7:00 p.m. Hodgeman County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matches -- so hopefully South Barber likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, Hodgeman County faced Minneola in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Hodgeman County was beaten by Minneola 74-40. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Hodgeman County's defeat came about despite a quality game from Owen Reece, who threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in three touchdowns on the ground. Hazen Rydquist was in the mix as well, providing Hodgeman County with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, South Barber had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 35 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 48-0 victory over Stafford at home. South Barber's offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead South Barber to victory, but perhaps none more so than Briggs Jewell, who threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.3% of his passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Lukas Dunham, who gained 77 total yards and three touchdowns.
South Barber's win bumped their season record to 6-1 while Hodgeman County's defeat dropped theirs to 5-2.
Friday's contest will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Reece and Jewell. Reece has put up some stellar numbers this year, and currently owns excellent season averages of 267.9 passing yards and two passing touchdowns per game this season. For his part, Jewell has averaged 157.6 passing yards and three passing touchdowns per game this season.
Everything came up roses for Hodgeman County against South Barber in their previous matchup back in October of 2022 as the squad secured a 58-28 victory. Does Hodgeman County have another victory up their sleeve, or will South Barber turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
