The Phoenix Firebirds took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They secured a 45-40 W over Jordan-Elbridge. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Phoenix also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2022.
When it comes to explaining why Jordan-Elbridge lost, one person who can't be blamed is Abbie Ahern. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 15 points and 17 rebounds. Ahern scored a full 37.5% of Jordan-Elbridge's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Makayla Penird, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
Phoenix's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Jordan-Elbridge, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Phoenix will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Solvay at 6:30 p.m. on January 2, 2024. As for Jordan-Elbridge, they will head out on the road to face off against Cazenovia at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
