The Dawson School Mustangs will challenge the Clear Creek Golddiggers at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Dawson School is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Dawson School fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Platte Valley on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They came up short against the Broncos, falling 10-2. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Mustangs couldn't push the score so high this time.
Dawson School saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shelton Johnson, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run. Milo Richtel was another, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Clear Creek, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They came out on top against Ellicott by a score of 12-7 on Saturday.
Zephyr Schuessler made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Blake Weichel was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Clear Creek's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-7 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Caden McKown, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Clear Creek kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Clear Creek's win bumped their record up to 6-7. As for Dawson School, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-8.
Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Dawson School has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .490. However, it's not like Clear Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .453. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Dawson School took their victory against Clear Creek in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 15-0 score. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Golddiggers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
