Given Charlotte Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked fourth, while South Mecklenburg is ranked 123rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Charlotte Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Blanca Thomas led the charge by dropping a double-double on 21 points and 19 rebounds. Thomas hasn't dropped below three blocks for eight straight games. Gracynn Gough was another key contributor, almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds.
Despite the loss, South Mecklenburg still got an impressive performance from Makailah Davis, who scored 12 points along with four steals. Davis has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. Another player making a difference was KB Brown, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Charlotte Catholic's win was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-3. As for South Mecklenburg, their loss dropped their record down to 11-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charlotte Catholic will take on Rocky River at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Charlotte Catholic is facing Rocky River at the right time seeing as Rocky River is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for South Mecklenburg, they will head out on the road to face off against Palisades at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully South Mecklenburg focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Wednesday.
