Trabuco Hills dropped down to 6-2 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They took a 45-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mater Dei Monarchs. On the bright side, the 40- point performance marked the Mustangs' highest-scoring match to date.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Emma Ortiz, who picked up 154 receiving yards and three TDs. Ortiz's longest reception was for an incredible 71 yards. Another signal caller making a difference was Ellie Tapper, who threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns.
Even if they lost, Trabuco Hills' defensive line still kept up the pressure with five sacks. Kayla Phan was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up four herself. Ky Chappel got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
As for Mater Dei, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.3 points over those games.
Kendra Hansen was her usual excellent self, rushing for 122 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 7.2 yards per carry, and also throwing for 245 yards and three TDs while completing 90% of her passes. A healthy portion of Hansen's aerial production (93 yards to be exact) went to Rachel Goran, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Trabuco Hills wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 41-21 loss against Santa Margarita on the 2nd. As for Mater Dei, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Northwood at 6:00 p.m. on the 18th.
