Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
For the second consecutive season,
Colson Coon of
Sheridan is the 2022 MaxPreps Wyoming High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior helped the Broncs go 12-0 en route to the school's 29th state championship.
In a 34-23 win over East (Cheyenne) in the Class 4A title game, Coon turned in a performance for the ages, accounting for all of his team's points. He ran for 248 yards and three touchdowns, scored another on a pick-six, kicked two field goals and converted four point-after kicks. In addition to his interception, he also recorded 13 tackles.
Coon broke a state record in the semifinals during a 63-42 win over Cheyenne Central by piling up a remarkable 517 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
For the season, Coon ran for 2,195 and 34 touchdowns, giving him over 3,800 yards and 53 scores on the ground over his final two seasons at Sheridan. He also stars in soccer and wrestling for the Broncs.
