Class A Game of the Week: #5 Millard West vs. #8 Omaha North (at Kinnick Stadium)
It doesn't get any easier for Millard West. After spending the first two weeks of the 2007 season knocking off Omaha Creighton Prep and previously top-ranked Lincoln Southwest, a date with Omaha North looms.
Millard West have been balanced in its approach thus far, using a combination of quarterback Jesse VerVelde's arm and the running power of Tyler Davis. In the 35-13 domination of Lincoln Southwest, VerVelde and receiver Jake Drwal got rolling early on, combining six times for 83 yards. VerVelde and Drwal hooked up for two touchdowns in the victory.
Drwal comes into Week 3 as one of the top receivers in Class A with 183 yards on the young season. David grinded out 107 yards on 18 carries for the Wildcats in the victory over Lincoln Southwest. Along with a 1-yard touchdown run to cap off the scoring, Davis added a 13-yard fumble return in the victory.
Omaha North are young, but very talented. Running back Brenton Braford leads the way for the Vikings, having rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown in a 21-7 victory over Bellevue East last week. Quarterback Tyler Beene has a capable arm and could disrupt the Wildcat secondary through the air. The defense could hold the key to North's success, led by All-State defensive tackle Nick Phillips.
Class B Game of the Week: #8 Fairbury at #10 Holdrege
The Lee Horky Air Show hits the road to Holdrege in a battle between two ranked teams in Class B. Through two games, Horky has thrown for 612 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Jeffs. In last week's 41-14 triumph over Elkhorn Mount Michael, Horky threw five first half touchdown passes as Fairbury led 35-0. Devin Schmidt and Brian Dein both hauled in two touchdown receptions against Mount Michael. Schmidt's were from 78 and 76 yards.
Holdrege needed to work overtime to take its season opener, but the Dusters prevailed 14-7 against Minden. Travis VanEperen posted a solid outing in his first start of the season with 131 yards passing and won the game with his 5-yard run in overtime.
