La Jolla has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the San Dieguito Academy Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Given that the pair suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.
Last Thursday, La Jolla was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 58-52 to University City. While losing is never fun, La Jolla can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 374th, while University City is ranked 177th).
Despite the defeat, La Jolla had strong showings from Elijah Vaz, who scored 23 points, and Michael Contreras, who scored 16 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Vaz has scored all season.
Meanwhile, San Dieguito Academy's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight loss. They were outmatched by Torrey Pines at home and fell 84-32. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points San Dieguito Academy has scored all season.
La Jolla's loss dropped their record down to 12-8. As for San Dieguito Academy, they bumped their record down to 4-12 with that defeat, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season.
La Jolla strolled past San Dieguito Academy when the teams last played back in December of 2023 by a score of 58-39. Will La Jolla repeat their success, or does San Dieguito Academy have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
