Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in
high school basketball. America's source for high school sports
continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the
top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and
individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Ron Holland of
Duncanville (Texas) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Texas High School Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-8 senior forward led the Panthers to a 29-1 record and a No. 2 ranking nationally.
For the season, Holland averaged 20.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 54.4 percent from the field and 79.3 percent from the free throw line.

During Holland's four seasons with the program he compiled over 1,500 points and 900 rebounds. Duncanville finished ranked nationally all four years and twice won a state title with the pandemic preventing a potential third. The Panthers went unbeaten in the state playoffs during that time.
Headed to Texas next season, Holland is regarded as the No. 6 prospect in the Class of 2023 according to 247Sports. Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA were among other programs to extend offers.
Cason Wallace of
Richardson was the 2021-22 Texas Player of the Year.
Currently a freshman at Kentucky, Wallace averaged 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.4 steals last season to guide Richardson to the No. 8 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for
inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in
April. Past selections include 2023 NBA All-Stars Bam Adebayo (2016),
Jaylen Brown (2015), DeMar DeRozan (2008), Kevin Durant (2006), Anthony
Edwards (2019), De'Aaron Fox (2016), Jrue Holiday (2008), Jaren Jackson
(2017), Kyrie Irving (2010), Julius Randle (2013), Jayson Tatum (2016)
and Zion Williamson (2018).
