Serrano (Phelan, Calif.) jumped out to an early lead against
Highland (Palmdale, Calif.) and never looked back on the way to a 28-13 victory on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks put up 14 points in the opening frame. Serrano scored on a
Michael Hawkins touchdown run, a touchdown, a
Daniel Epperson touchdown pass to
Kyle Jergensen and a touchdown.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Hawkins in the first quarter, SHS led 14-0 at the half.
The Phelan school expanded its lead to 21 points entering the fourth quarter. The Diamondbacks scored once in the quarter on a touchdown pass by Epperson to Jergensen.
The Bulldogs'
Donte Ross was the standout player for his team. The junior quarterback ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
Serrano's most effective player was Epperson. He threw three touchdowns.
SHS got revenge for last year's 27-22 loss to Highland with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Highland, which notched a 28-14 victory over Golden Valley in its previous outing. With the win the Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to four games.
Highland (1-2) goes up against Palmdale in a Golden game matchup next week, while Serrano (4-0) locks horns with Centennial in a non-conference game.
