The Deep Run Wildcats will face off against the Godwin Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Deep Run sitting on three straight victories and Godwin on ten.
Deep Run took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Manchester, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Wildcats' pitcher stepped up to hand the Lancers a 2-0 shutout on Wednesday. The two-run effort marked the Wildcats' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Hope Tate was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Godwin faced Glen Allen in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Eagles were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over the Jaguars. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by seven runs or more this season.
Katelyn Hubley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Godwin let Carter Dunham and Adelynn Collins run wild. Dunham went 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple, while Collins went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one double. That's the most runs Dunham has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Avery Fankhauser, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Godwin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.
Godwin pushed their record up to 10-0 with the win, which was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Deep Run, their record now sits at 7-3.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Deep Run hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .346. However, it's not like Godwin struggles in that department as they've averaged .359. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Deep Run couldn't quite get it done against Godwin when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 5-1. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
