Two dominant guards in Bryce Peters and Cade Keller are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Ashe County Huskies will venture away from home to face off against the Watauga Pioneers at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Ashe County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.3 points per game this season.
Last Monday, Ashe County lost to South Caldwell at home by a 55-36 margin. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 441st, while the Spartans are ranked 131st).
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Peters, who went 6-for-10 to rack up 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ian Graybeal, who posted eight points and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Watauga entered their tilt with Freedom on Wednesday with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. They had just enough and edged the Patriots out 72-69.
Watauga's win came from a few key players Ashe County will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Josiah Railey, who went 7-for-13 on his way to 18 points and six boards. He is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Keller was another key player, putting up 20 points.
Watauga pushed their record up to 16-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 23 points. As for Ashe County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Ashe County has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Watauga struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.1 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Ashe County might still be hurting after the 76-52 defeat they got from Watauga in their previous matchup back in January. Can Ashe County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
