Bernards extended their winning streak to five on Thursday, bumping them up to 11-6. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Warren Hills Regional Blue Streaks, sneaking past 5-3. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 6-0 on Tuesday.
James Ferrante and Tyce Hanratty were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Ferrante struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Hanratty pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Those six strikeouts gave Ferrante a new career-high. At the plate, Ferrante went 1-for-6 with one home run, while Hanratty went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sean Arcelay, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Tim Koke also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Bernards kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
As for Warren Hills Regional, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat they have suffered since April 17th.
Like Bernards, Warren Hills Regional also got a great game from a two-way player: Cohl Stevens. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. Stevens is becoming a predictor of Warren Hills Regional's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 6-12 when he doesn't). Stevens was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one double.
In other batting news, Ryan Everett was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-6 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Owen Spender, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with one stolen base.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bernards will face off against Bound Brook at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Crusaders have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.54 runs per game on average), something the Mountaineers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Warren Hills Regional, they will challenge West Morris Central at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
