MT Breland was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He has become a key player for Columbia: the team is 10-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, JP Haddox made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Lawrence County made easy work of Richland on Friday and carried off a 15-1 win. Considering the Cougars have won ten matches by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Columbia, Lawrence County also got a great game from a two-way player: Weston Dunaway. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Dunaway was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Caden Case was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Grey Boyd, who scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Lawrence County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .600. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Lawrence County is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-10 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games. As for Columbia, they dropped their record down to 15-10 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Columbia has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Lawrence County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Columbia beat Lawrence County 12-9 in their previous meeting back in February. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
