It wasn't quite like tackling the 1927 Yankees, but the
La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) boys basketball team knew it had its hands full last week.
Calling it Murderer's Row was a bit extreme, yet facing off against three Top 10 teams was no small bargain.
Over a five-day stretch, the Mavericks were slated to battle No. 9-ranked Francis Parker, No. 5 Rancho Buena Vista and No. 2 El Camino.
La Costa Canyon (18-3, 2-0) pinched Parker 64-52 in a nonleague game to start the week. The Mavericks then corraled RBV's Mustangs, 71-55.
"We took it game by game, but now that it's over, it was fun," LCC coach Dave Cassaw told The North County Times after his No. 7-ranked Mavericks upset El Camino 70-66 in an Avocado West League game.
SANTEE WEST HILLS HITS 10 TREYS, YET NO MATCH FOR GROSSMONTWhile the defending Grossmont Hills League champion
Grossmont (El Cajon) Foothillers (12-8, 1-2) finally began performing like the team they were expected to be on Friday night, host
West Hills (Santee) managed to can 10 3-pointers and still was never a factor in the game.
The problem for the Wolf Pack (8-12, 1-2) is by the time they were able to dial up long distance it was the second half and the Foothillers were rolling 43-11. All of the Pack's 3-pointers came in the final two quarters.
What caged the Wolf Pack was 3-for-24 shooting from the floor in the first half while Grossmont was 15-for-28. Bottom line is that computed to a 32-point deficit for West Hills.
RANCHO BUENA VISTA'S MISTER DEE DOES IT DIFFERENTLY
For Rancho Buena Vista High's
Johnny Dee making only 10 baskets in a game could be considered a slump. The senior guard, who owns a 32.5 scoring average and is arguably the top 3-point shooter in the CIF-SDS, connected on only 10 buckets in a 72-64 victory over La Jolla Country Day.
Where Dee punished the Torreys was from the free throw line, where he converted 22 of 24 free throws as he finished with 44 points. It was the fifth time this season that Dee has broken the 40-point barrier.
HIGH-FLYING TORREY PINES FALCON
Much like his brother, sophomore James Rahon, now at San Diego State, Torrey Pines junior
Joe Rahon canned 26 points, most coming off five 3-pointers, in a rout of Mt. Carmel. The Falcons' 6-foot-2 Rahon registered a game-high 30 points, which was anchored by six treys in a 73-71 loss to Los Angeles Windward.
MARSHALL DILLON IS ON THE MARK
Sharp-shooting
Shane Dillon hammered down a career-high 36 points – including 6 of 13 shooting from above the arc – to carry Christian to an impressive Central League victory Friday (Jan. 28) night at Kearny. The 6-foot-6 Dillon was also 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
