Bayfield and Centauri are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2021, but not for long. After both having extra time off, the two teams will shake off the rust and duke it out at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Bayfield is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
Last Tuesday, Bayfield beat Montezuma-Cortez 3-1.
Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 25-17.
Bayfield can attribute much of their success to Maeli Quintana, who had eight digs and three aces. Lily Muir also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assists of the season.
Meanwhile, Centauri was able to grind out a solid win over Montezuma-Cortez on Friday, taking the game 3-1. The Falcons haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.
Centauri walked away with the win (and looked especially good in the third set). The match finished with set scores of 25-19, 24-26, 25-13, 26-24.
Bayfield better focus on containing Paityn Sowards and Lauren Gallegos as the pair were huge in Centauri's win. Sowards had ten digs and one assist, while Gallegos had eight digs and one assist. Those ten digs gave Sowards a new career-high.
Centauri was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 15 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least seven aces in three consecutive contests.
Bayfield's record is now 11-5. As for Centauri, their record now sits at 12-5.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's match: Bayfield has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 7.3 aces per game. However, it's not like Centauri struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.8 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Bayfield took their victory against Centauri in their previous matchup back in September by a conclusive 3-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
