On Saturday, the Doral Academy Firebirds faced the American Heritage Patriots in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Doral Academy fell just short of American Heritage by a score of 50-48. Doral Academy's defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, Doral Academy saw an underclassman step up: Ashley Martinez scored 20 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Martinez continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Stephanie Vega, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds.
Doral Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 14-4. As for American Heritage, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 14-4.
Doral Academy will be playing at home against Miami at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for American Heritage, they will head out on the road to square off against Dillard at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Dillard will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 77th, while American Heritage is ranked eighth).
