The Hawthorne Valley Wildcats pushed their score all the way to 65 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Millbrook 70-65. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Thursday (57), Hawthorne Valley still had to take the loss.
Francis Newlin was Hawthorne Valley's leading scorer, having posted two points.
Millbrook's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Andrew Szostak led the charge by dropping a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds. Those 13 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Owen Iannucci, who scored 19 points along with eight rebounds.
Hawthorne Valley's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Millbrook, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Hawthorne Valley will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Argyle at 6:30 p.m. on January 3, 2024. Millbrook will finish 2023 at home by hosting Eldred at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Eldred will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New York Rankings (they are ranked 676th, while Millbrook is ranked 229th).
