The Elkhart Lions will square off against the Chesterton Trojans at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Elkhart is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Elkhart took a 13-run loss the last time they faced off against South Bend Saint Joseph, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Lions came out on top in a nail-biter against the Huskies on Wednesday, sneaking past 3-1.
Elkhart saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Quinn Rost, who went 2-for-4 with one run.
Chesterton hadn't beaten Hobart on the road since May 25, 2018 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. The Trojans blew past the Brickies 13-2. Considering the Trojans have won seven games by more than eight runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Troy Barrett made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and only one walk). Chesterton is undefeated when Barrett allows two or fewer earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Barrett was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Josh Davis was excellent, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Nick Foust was another key player, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Elkhart's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Chesterton, their win bumped their record up to 10-6.
Elkhart might still be hurting after the 10-0 defeat they got from Chesterton in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Lions avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
