Baseball Game Preview: Delavan-Darien Comets vs. Monroe Cheesemakers

The Delavan-Darien Comets will challenge the Monroe Cheesemakers at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.

Evansville hit Delavan-Darien with a nine-run seventh inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Comets took a 16-12 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Blue Devils. The Comets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Delavan-Darien saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Haaken Hovestol, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double. Hovestol is becoming a predictor of the Comets' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 6-7-1 when he doesn't). Another was Braedyn McKean, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Monroe's offense. They fell just short of Dodgeville by a score of 1-0 on Monday. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Cheesemakers were not able to get on the board.

Trent Wyss spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up eight Ks.

Delavan-Darien's defeat dropped their record down to 8-8-1. As for Monroe, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-6 record this season.

Monroe's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Delavan-Darien has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .432. It's a different story for Monroe, though, as they've only averaged .360. Will they be able to contain Delavan-Darien's hitters?
