After flying high against the Bishop O'Connell Knights last Sunday, the Potomac School Panthers came back down to earth. Potomac School lost to St. Mary's on the road by a decisive 74-58 margin on Wednesday. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Potomac School's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zora Burrell, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 14 rebounds. Burrell has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Sabrina Anderson, who scored 16 points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Potomac School were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Mary's only racked up 20 assists.
St. Mary's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Bailey Harris led the charge by scoring 22 points along with five rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Harris has scored at least 25% of St. Mary's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexandra Vandiver, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Potomac School's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for St. Mary's, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-5.
Potomac School won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against St. Charles at 5:00 p.m. on December 28th. St. Charles knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matchups -- so hopefully Potomac School likes a good challenge.
