Maple Mountain is 9-1 against Payson since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the Lions at 3:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Maple Mountain 2.5, Payson 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Maple Mountain is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Lehi just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Monday. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pioneers. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Eagles were not able to get on the board.
Kavyn Carter was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and not a single walk). He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Maple Mountain saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mitch Walker, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double.
Meanwhile, Payson came tearing into Wednesday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Phoenix. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won five contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
The team relied heavily on Brigzen Houser, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2025. Another player making a difference was Ruger Braithwaite, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Payson kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matchups.
Maple Mountain's defeat dropped their record down to 9-2. As for Payson, their victory bumped their record up to 8-2.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Maple Mountain hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .371. However, it's not like Payson struggles in that department as they've averaged .352. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Maple Mountain got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 against Payson by a conclusive 16-1 score. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
