It was a good run, but the Douglas Bulldogs unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Wednesday. They took a hard 62-48 fall against Rio Rico. The match was a 23-23 toss-up at halftime, but Douglas was outscored by Rio Rico in the second.
Francia Rubio and Scarlette Ruiz certainly did their best on Wednesday to try and avoid the loss. Rubio scored 19 points along with three steals and three blocks, while Ruiz scored 14 points along with five steals. Rubio has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Keyra Espinosa was another key contributor, scoring six points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Douglas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rio Rico only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Angelina Whelan was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 12 rebounds for Rio Rico. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Whelan has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalia Gonzalez, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Douglas' defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-4. As for Rio Rico, they pushed their record up to 15-2 with that win, which was their ninth straight on the road.
Douglas will challenge Amphitheater at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Rio Rico, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Palo Verde at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Palo Verde comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last nine games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
